Benjamin,
Good point. The term “home theater” tries to summarize the trend and creates an oxymoron on the way. Technically “early release” is probably better suited although vague.
As a consumer, I agree and the theater is a big part of the experience for me as well. But I am also sure that others have different preferences. The FCC is mentioning two examples in their decision: families with young children and people with disabilities. So it will be an interesting experience.

The marketing of the expression "Home Theatre on Demand" reminds me of a story I learned at an MBA class.

The cinema industry was in shambles in Europe in the eighties. Cinemas were closing everywhere and attendance kept on shrinking. So the industry tried to cut cost with smaller theaters...

A Belgian guy (whose name I forget) realized that what people actually wanted from a night out at the cinema was just that "a night out". i.e. lots of fresh (expensive) popcorn, huge screens and comfy seats, lots of choice - everything that was opposite to the living TV. The fact new cinema complexes are out of town helps to make it more of a special occasion i.e. take the car etc ...

So I wonder how "Home Theatre on Demand" fits into this. Maybe "Home theatre" is an oxymoron?
